shop Fred Perry

It was at the end of the 1940's that Fred Perry was approached by Tibby Wegner, a former Austrian footballer, with an idea for marketing a sweatband bearing the Fred Perry name. They redesigned the original sweatband, made from bath towel material, so that it was in Leicester which was light, soft and pliable. From that moment they were in business. They marketed the sweatbands by giving them away to the top players at the best tournaments, persuading them to wear them on court' the players did, and Fred Perry sportswear was launched.
Fred soon developed business with Wegner by making Fred Perry clothing. The Fred Perry logo was skillfully merchandised by offering shirts to all the leading players, who were only too keen to get their hands on these new items since they looked better than the baggy, ill-fitting alternatives. The construction of the cotton pique shirt, with its open honeycomb stitch, made it perfect as performance wear for tennis. It was stylish, top button fastened under an SB3 or mohair suit, and durable enough to wear all night and still look fresh in the morning. The Fred Perry shirt soon became the first crossover brand from sportswear to streetwear. On thing that remains constant is the original slim fit cotton pique shirt is still made in England to the same shape using the same fabric as it was when the Fred Perry shirt was first launched way back in 1952. Fashions may come and go by style is timeless. The Fred Perry laurel wreath has developed into on of the best known and most instantly recognizable logos in the fashion world. Today the brand is associated with authenticity, heritage, and integrity.
